28 May Considering Wooden Windows
Considering Wooden Doors and Windows, here is what you need to know….
Classic and timeless are sometimes the first things that come to mind when thinking about wooden doors and windows, however how do they fare against the modern PVCu versions we have come so accustomed to.
Did you know timber frames have the benefit of being a more environmentally friendly option that PVCu, they will actually reduce CO2 in the environment in their lifetime in the same way a tree would!
Many homeowners were convinced that PVCu windows and doors were the most energy efficient and one of the best ways to save money on heating bills, get rid of the drafty wooden frames and replace them with PVCu with the added benefit of no maintenance.
20 years or so since that was all the rage, now we have factory finished engineered wooden frames that offer all the benefits and more of PVCu. Maintenance concerns are a thing of the past, if anything the once every 8-10 year recoating is a benefit either coat with the same finish or if you fancy giving your home a new look paint them a different colour, you can’t do that with PVCu. A PVCu window frame has a 20-30 year lifespan but looked after correctly a wooden frame could serve you double that.
Energy efficiency needn’t be of concern now either, the glazing unit is what makes the difference and now both wooden and PVCu offer double and triple glazing as options.
If you still need convincing, here is one last thought about the environment. PVCu doors and windows cannot be easily recycled, wooden frames at the end of their life can be fully recycled so as well as making your house look fabulous for potentially the next 60 years you can rest easy knowing the impact on the environment from production through to recycling is far less than that of a PVCu unit.
